From a local forum
"I heard from a friend who did a research before on 500 NUS girls on what make a man attractive. After data gathering, she found NUS girls prefer these races in descending order:
1) Angmoh
2) Keling
3) Chinese
4) Malays
Is this prefernce biological or social conditioned? If it is latter, I would say sending my children to NUS/NTU is a very sad thing to do. Ancestors will turn over in their graves.
For man,I would still prefer chinese girl(not cheena specifically, but chinese, including malayisan, indon, thai etc...)
Am I racist?"
Seems to me that Chinese guys are falling in favour liao....

It was probably 90% of them surveyed were Chinese Sgeans, we all know that most Sg girls are all labouring under the delusion of Ang moh tua kee-ism, the rest are probably from the other ethnic groups..

Seems to me that Chinese guys are falling in favour liao....Quite honestly straight off, I can tell you that this isn't true at all. Unless you're a total swine, Singapore guys do not experience any disadvantage when it comes to attracting local girls. I was attached twice myself in Uni and they both were local girls.
Neither do I see my male Singaporean peers have any problem getting hitched to local girls. At least, not based on reasons relating to race.
That aside, let me just comment on certain things about this "study". Somebody has already pointed out one issue which is the composition of the 500 girls. If the girls were all ang mohs, then it would explain the high indication for caucasian males.
Moreover, I realise that very often the data for such on campus research is done by asking friends or friends of friends to participate. As a result, there is a stronger tendency for a group of like-minded people giving results for this research. I'm not saying all 500 participants think absolutely alike, but the research may be more representative of a certain group within the campus than all the students as a whole.
It doesn't help also that most of the time Singaporeans are very bo chap about participating in this kind of ad-hoc things. Like I mentioned, a lot of the Singaporeans are merely helping out a friend. Otherwise, they'd only do it for free hello kitties or ECA points. I realise foreigners and caucasian students in particular are more enthusiastic when doing this kind of thing and they'll get their friends to do it together all for the fun of it. Singaporeans however will think twice about asking their friends to take part unless it was their own research and academic points on the line.

Other than my issue on the composition of the research/focus group, we also might have to take into consideration what questions were asked during the research process.
For example, the 500 female undergraduates could have been asked if they preferred to go on a date with a member of pop group 5566(sorry, I don't know any names) or with Tobey Mcguire. Quite honestly, NUS consists of more English-speaking local undergraduates as compared to NTU who have been said to be more cheenah than their NUS counterparts.
In other words, it's more likely with NUS undergraduates that they are the kind who do not follow chinese pop. Hence they're choice of Tobey Macguire in the above choice would be understandable.
Now, if this research were to be done in NTU, the results might vary from the NUS research a fair bit.

Also, just to add, the Ang Moh aspect can be a fad some of these young girls. Many of our local undergraduates were brought up in local schools where they interacted with none, if not very few cacausian friends.
But our Univeristy student composition is much more international in nature so these young girls suddenly meet these caucasian men who seem like such a fresh eye candy to them.
Sometimes, they just stick with a local guy in the end for a serious relationship.Edited by SumOne 18 Oct `06, 11:38PM

I like to read threads a la ppt style, sorry.Originally posted by Rock^Star:Thanks bro and may I also add to the summary that there could be problems within the sample size as well and hence, survey is unreliable.Actually not much main points, you already pointed out one in fact. It's just that I chose to elaborate to better illustrate certain points.
1)Problems within sample size.
2)My other issue was on the type of questions used during research.
3)My last point was that the ang moh factor may just be a fad with these young girls.Edited by SumOne 18 Oct `06, 11:41PM
